Mahabalipuram is located near Chennai, the capital city of the state of Tamil Nadu, on the eastern or the coromandel coast of India. Mahabalipuram, also known as Mamallapuram, was a very well established sea port of the Pallava Dynasty, during the 7th and 10th centuries. The name Mamallapuram seems to have been derived from the title Mamallan meaning the Great Warrior of the King Narasimha Varman I.
Pallavas ruled the area from the 3rd to the 9th century and the best time which can be said as the Golden Era was from 650 and 750 AD. During this time creativity and imagination gained in the kingdom in both art and architecture. They gave shape to their imagination and so the town faced innovations in all the styles. There are rock cut caves, temples carved out from single rocks and is actually like an open air museum. The Pallava kings Narasimha Varman and the Rajasimha Varman created and preserved all these sculptures and carvings during their time and preserved for the future generation to see and enjoy the architecture. There are unique paintings, exuberant and innovative with various colours and styles.
You can see the rock temples caves surrounded by Casuarina trees , the silvery sand beach and the hand made crafts which are found all over the town. The visit to Mahabalipuram will be etched in your mind and will be unforgettable.
