Madras Race Club the oldest race club in India

Madras Race Club is a prestigious  race course,where fortunes have been won and lost right since its institution in 1777. Madras race Club is the oldest club in India and has seen a lot of history in the making.

Some of the well known and illustrious visitors from all over the world for the last two centuries include King Don Alfonso of Spain, The Earl and Countess of Derby, His Royal Highness and The Prince of Wales (the Late Duke of Windsor). The most celebrated King of the Horse-racing turf in India, Dr. M. A. M. Ramaswamy, is the Chairman of the Madras Race Club.

History of the Madras Race Club
In 1877, about  81 cawnies of land from Adyar villages of Venkatapuram and Velacheri was granted by the then Government to conduct races . Later 36 cawnies  were added  to the 81 cawnies and there were two race courses.  A smaller race course for training horses and a bigger one with a grand stand for the guests to watch the races.
A club  was formed in 1837 and ws there  when the Prince of Wales Edward VII visited in 1875.  Later  a Club was formed with 50 members  in 1896  and the funds managed till then by the stewards of the Madras races were handed over to the Club  and was named as the Madras Race Club.

Membership of the Madras Race Club
Later members were added by the committee of management of the Madras Race Clubunder the categories Institution membership and Long term temporary Membership.

1) Institution Membership
a) Admission fee / Entrance fee - Rs. 5,00,000 (Five lacs Only) per nominee for twenty years per institution.
 b) Admission fee / Entrance fee - Rs. 3,00,000 (Three lacs Only) for Two nominees for 5 years per institution.
2) Long Term Temporary Membership
Admission fee / Entrance fee - Rs.50,000 (Rupees Fifty Thousand Only) for a period of three years per individual.
