Kovalam / Covelong Beach on the ECR, near Chennai

Kovalam of Chennai, can be said to be a secret best kept by the Chennaites. The other Kovalam, in the city of Thiruvananthapuram is better known and is a tourist attraction on its own b ut many would not even heard of the Kovalam near Chennai. The Britishers called it Covelong and now it is known outside as the place where Taj Fisherman Cove is. This beach in Chennai is less known and unexplored much by the tourists coming into Chennai.

Covelong or the Kovalam is located at about 25 kilometers from the heart of Chennai on the East Coast Road, better known as ECR. The beach is surrounded by Coconut and Casuarina trees looks so beautiful on its own. Here you can bathe in the water as the waters are shallow, play as much as you want as the beach is less crowded since it is unknown to the tourists.

There are boatsmen  there who are willing to take you into the sea, to about 4-5 kilometers. There they will throw a net and give you life jackets to wear. You can jump in to the water in that big net, you will be safe. You can swim and play as much as you want and then return to the beach. You can get freshly caught fish also there. The sunset in the evening looks very beautiful throough the trees surrounding the beach.

For Accommodations you can stay on in Chennai and hop into any of the buses going to Mahabalipuram. There will be lots of them going the way. You may not have to search much for accommodations if you plan to go to kovalam. There are lots of hotels and resorts in the East coast road, you can choose one among them or stay in Chennai just as well and then make Kovalam a day trip.
