Blue Cross of India was established in 1959 as a society to alleviate the suffering of animals. Now the Blue Cross has become one of India's largest animal welfare organizations, running active animal welfare, animal rights and humane education programmes.
Their work has received national recognition. The office bearers of their committee have been in service in many of the State and the Central government Committees for more than forty years.
Governing Body members have served on the Central Zoo Authority and on Mr. Sam Pitroda's Street Dog Mission appointed by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and on State Animal Welfare Boards. The AWBI granted recognition in 1966. The Blue Cross is affiliated to the RSPCA and WSPA.
At Guindy, Blue Cross Avenue there is an hospital, shelters for large and small animals, aviary, ambulance services, ABC-AR programme, library.
