Chennai International Airport

Chennai International airport is located at about 7 kilometers from the city of Chennai. The airport was known as Madras International airport in  the earlier days.  There is an expension going on at present at Thirusulam Chennai airport complex. This is the their busiest aiport in India in terms of traffic in both the  international and overall passenger traffic  which is e4xpected to increase almost double from the middle of next year. The ongoing expansion is expected to get over by that time.

Chennai International airport has an ntry for the passengers at Thirusulam and for the cargo at the old Meenambakkam complex. The domestic and the International terminals of the Chennai International airport  have been named after the two  former chief ministers of Tamil Nadu, Kamaraj Domestic terminal and the Anna International Terminal.

History of the Chennai Airport
Madras airport was one of the first airports in India alongwith the then Bombay. Madras airport was the final destination of the first flight  which left Bombay and flow to Belgaum and then landed at Madras in the year 1954.  The passenger terminal was at the North east end of the present airport which was at the Meenambakkam area. The airport used to be known as Madras Meenambakkam airport in those times.

Later a new complex was constructed  at Thirusulam and the passenger operations were shited to further south near Pallavaram. The old terminal at Meenambakkam is used as a Cargo Terminal. Now this complex has also become the base of the well known courier company  in India, Blue Dart. There are 3 Terminals at the Chennai airport that is

  • Cargo terminal at Meenambakkam
  • Kamaraj Domestic Terminal at Thirusulam
  • Anna International Terminal at Thirusulam

The domestic and International terminals are interconnected by a link building  which has a restaurant and an administration building. All the needed transit passenger facilities like restrooms, ATM's are also made available there.

Modernization and Expansion work at Chennai Airport
The expansion works are being carried out by the Airports Authority of India and it includes the creation of parallel run ways, taxe ways, new passenger terminal buildings as well as aprons.  The expansion work is also taken up in the Manapakkam, Kolapakkam, Gerugambakkam and Tharapakkam. The work is expected to start soon in this sector.
At the same time Chennai Metro Rail is getting ready to connect the airport to various other parts of the chennai city.
